Extracellular Matrix Abnormalities in Schizophrenia

Harry Pantazopoulos, Ph.D. Dept. of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

Chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans are extracellular matrix molecules involved in neuronal migration and maturation of synapses. These molecules also interact with each of the neurotransmitter systems implicated in schizophrenia. We will discuss evidence for abnormalities of chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans in the brain and olfactory epithelium of schizophrenic subjects.
